St. Thomas Soccer

Welcome to goSTAsoccer.com

“Thank you” doesn’t seem sufficient to express my gratitude for being able to coach the boys’ soccer program at St. Thomas for the past 19 years.  I have been told that St. Thomas is going in another direction with their program and my contract will not be renewed next year.  While it came as a shock, it is their prerogative, as I only had year to year contracts.  I left coaching the Amesbury high school boys’ soccer program when my son, Jason, entered St. Thomas as a freshman in 2003.  I wanted to be a dad and watch him play sports.  Jack Leary, the Athletic Director at the time, called my wife at Sacred Heart School and asked if she knew any soccer coaches for their JV or freshmen teams.  So much for being just a Dad.  I coached the JV team for 3 years and took over the head coaching job when Ed Devereaux moved on to coach at Fisher College in 2006.  When my second son, Ross, graduated in 2010 the administration asked what my plans were, and I told them I’d love to stay and coach as long as they wanted me to.

It has been a pleasure getting to know so many young gentlemen and their families and to be a part of their 4 years of high school.  Also, all the faculty and staff at St. Thomas who have helped me over the years.  Many seem like family as I’ve gotten to know theirs.  I really appreciated all the people who cut the grass and painted the lines all the years before we got the beautiful new stadium and turf field.  It was also nice to coach the team that had the first win in the stadium.

While I feel I did a lot to make the program grow, things like an undefeated season, being the first team to have a Twitter account or playing the first Pink Game for cancer don’t hold a candle to all the players who come back and express their gratitude for helping to make their high school years so memorable.  To be invited to their weddings or meeting their children or have them tell me they are coaching their son or daughter’s soccer team.
I would like to thank all the people who helped me as assistant coaches over the 19 years.  Every one of these people made my job easier and helped make the program better:   Jerry Morin (2006-2010), Ray Noiles (2011-2013), Dave Milner (2011), Tim Wyand (2009-2010), Matthew Guarente(2013), Charlie Griffiths (2012-2013), Charlie Umland (2014-2015), Howard Puertas (2015), Adam Riker (2016), Jason Suleski (2012-2014), Ross Suleski (2015-2021) and Dave Salvacion 2006-2011, 2014-2021)
I would like to thank all the players, parents, faculty and staff for all the awards this team won over my term as coach.  36 All State Players, 17 play-off appearances, 3 semi-finals and one state final.
