2011 St. Thomas Boys Soccer
The 2011 season home opener for the
Saints is on
Friday August 26th at 4:00pm
We will host the Portsmouth High School
Clippers
this year
on the St. Thomas varsity
field.
The JV teams will play at the same time on the JV field.
All
Freshmen players are required to attend and help out
with games and
fundraising.
The teams will play the game with Select "The Cure" soccer
balls.
Players will wear pink sweatbands and headbands.
Some will have pink
laces in their cleats.
This is done to raise awareness that
cancer touches everyone's lives.
Everyone is effected by cancer in some way.
It could be a family member, a relative, a friend or someone you know.
A little history of the season opener "in Pink":
In the 2009 home opener
St. Thomas played Oyster River to raise money
to fight breast cancer.
This was done to raise some money, but also awareness that cancer touches everyone's lives.
In that 2009 game Ross Suleski scored the loan goal as the
Saints won their home opener against Oyster River.
Ross played in memory of
his Grandmother Betty Peterson who passed away from Lung Cancer.
The teams raised $338.00 over all.
In 2010 we made the game a bit more
personal.
What can make the game more personal than playing for
cancer awareness?
Playing to help one persons fight for cancer.
Playing to help one family.
Playing to raise money to help a child directly.
I'd like you to meet Rylie Cruz.
Rylie lived in New Hampshire with her family.
Hailee, John, Karen, Rylie and Makayla
On Jan 9,2010 Rylie had a big belly and the family thought she
was constipated. Rylie was brought to the ER, she was diagnosed with an enlarged
Liver and was transported to Children's Hospital at Dartmouth in Hanover.
Rylie was then transferred to Children's Hospital in Boston. She was poked, prodded, and x-rayed many times. They found that Rylie has a large Tumor in/next to her Liver and everything pointed towards
Cancer. She has been a little trooper and behaved so well for all the
Doctors and Nurses. There were multiple teams of doctors working with her from
both Children's Hospital and Dana Farber.
Donations from the game were sent to the Cruz family to help defer the costs they incur driving from
New
Hampshire to Dana Farber and Children's hospital
We played the Windham Jaguars and won 2-1 on goals from Connor Bailey and Ed Conroy
We raised over $500.00 for Cancer and Rylie Cruz
Unfortunately Rylie lost a tough fight after a year and a half.
