St. Thomas vs Coe Brown
September 11, 2012

The Saints hosted Coe Brown Northwood Academy.

On the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks St. Thomas was in the midst of Spirit Week at school and a long stretch of home games.

After losing the last three games by the same score of 2-1 the players were looking to turn things around.

The Saints took the field with Jon Nartiff and Eric Eames as Strikers.  The Midfield was Evan Surprenant, Bryan King, TJ Tetreault and Tommy Griffiths.  The Defense was Noah Schwaegerle, Sebastian Olsen, Brian Ellis and Aaron DuboisBen Mardin was in between the pipes.

St. Thomas set the tone early as King stole the ball from the Bears defense and went in on goal at 4:46.  His shot beat the Coe Brown keeper and the Saints were up on the board quickly.

Eighteen minutes in Eames chipped a ball into the box and found Nartiff's head which redirected the ball on net.  The ball struck crossbar and just bounced over the net.

Xavier Quinn and Simon Smith went in at outside mids adding more pressure against the Bears.  Scott Lamoureux and Guy Kassas went in at Defense to help keep Coe Brown at bay.

Tony Kassas and Andrew Marino both added their skill set up top as forwards.

21:44 saw Nartiff take a cross pass from King and beat the Bears keeper to add an insurance goal.

Less than five minutes later at 26:32 Nartiff returned the favor with a cross pass to King who knocked in his second goal of the day.

John Sweeney, Jared Ham also saw time in the back four defending against the bears.

Beau Patteson and Noah Guilfuchi also added fresh legs to the outside midfield to work both sides of the ball against Coe Brown.

St. Thomas put 7 shots on net in the first half scoring 3 and hitting the post once.  The defense only allowed two shots on frame.

Halftime found the Saints up 3-0 with the highest lead they have ever held.

St. Thomas went out in the second half with the goal of preserving the shut out for Mardin and the Defense.

Coe Brown came out trying to posses the ball and work it up the field more than trying for balls over the top.  Each time they started to come in the Saints defense held.  Sweeney and Ellis both working hard to keep pressure away.  Schwaegerle and Olsen both coming up with big stops.  Dubois, Ham and Lamoureux each made great stops on drives by the Bears.  Both Kassas brothers, Tony and Guy, each added their efforts to the Defense also.

It wasn't just the defense that kept Coe Brown away from our goal.  The Midfield was constantly making sure we were always number up on every Bear attack.

St. Thomas was able to put three more shots on the Coe Brown Keeper while only allowing giving up two on Mardin.

The Team goal of not allowing a goal all game was reached with maximum effort by all.

Ben Mardin had 4 saves to earn his first Varsity Shutout.

St. Thomas will host Conval on Thursday at 4pm.
